Have you ever heard the phrase, "by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail"? Pretty harsh, right? But it's so true! Especially when it comes to preparing for your photoshoot. As important as it is for me to prepare for your photoshoot, you need to prepare too! Here are the biggest mistakes I have seen clients make before a photoshoot, and how to avoid them.
focusing on poses instead of connection
Many clients think they need to come prepared with a list of prompts and model-level posing. But stiff, over-practiced poses usually feel unnatural.
How to Avoid It:
Trust the process! I guide all posing and prompts so everything feels natural and relaxed. The best photos come from connection, movement, and genuine interactions, not perfect posing.
Not communicating special concerns ahead of time
Whether it's a location preference, a child who needs extra time to warm up, or a wardrobe mishap, keeping it quiet can make things harder.
How to Avoid It:
Tell your photographer ahead of time. We want to know how to make you feel comfortable. Simple communication makes the session smoother for everyone.
Waiting until the last minute to choose outfits:
I will be the first one to tell you that you do not need to go out and buy all new outfits for a photoshoot, but I will tell you that you should wait until the last minute to choose outfits. Whether you are a senior and are just planning outfits for yourself, or you have a family photoshoot with 3 little ones, waiting until the last minute will do you no good. Your outfits set the tone for your entire gallery. When a client rushes and grabs whatever is clean, it can lead to mismatched colors, busy patterns, or clothing that doesn't flatter on camera.
How to Avoid It:
Start planning at least 2 weeks ahead. Lay everything out together, and ensure the colors complement each other. Soft neutrals, textures, and layers always look timeless and photograph beautifully. If you realize you are missing something while laying everything out, now is the perfect time to get it!
Skipping snacks for the kids (or yourself!):
Hunger = crankiness. And crankiness + photos = not a very fun combo.
How to Avoid It:
Bring easy, non-messy snacks. Think fruit snacks, goldfish, or crackers. Avoid chocolate or anything that melts. You would be surprised at how much some fruit snacks can keep everyone happy.
Arriving late:
Golden hour waits for no one. Even a 10-minute delay can sometimes mean losing that soft, dreamy light.
How to Avoid It:
Aim to arrive 5-10 minutes early. This gives kids time to warm up, gives you time to fix air or tuck shirts, and helps everyone ease into the session calmly without feeling rushed.
A little preparation goes a long way in creating photos you'll truly love. By avoiding these common mistakes and following a few simple tips, your session experience will feel so much smoother!
